Volgens een nieuwe meta-analyse zou voeding rijk aan magnesium het risico op coronaire ziekten, CVA en diabetes type 2 verminderen.
Magnesium heeft veel biologische functies, waaronder de synthese van nucleïnezuren zoals DNA, de eiwitproductie en het glucosemetabolisme. Hoewel magnesium eerder al onderwerp was van verschillende gezondheidsclaims in de EU, werd het effect ervan op de cardiovasculaire gezondheid en diabetes nooit duidelijk aangetoond. Deze nieuwe meta-analyse suggereert nochtans dat magnesium echt nuttig zou kunnen zijn om bepaalde risico’s in deze domeinen in te perken.
Magnesium, cardiovasculaire ziekten en diabetes
De analyse werd uitgevoerd door onderzoekers van de universiteiten van Zhejiang en Zhengzhou in China en omvat veertig epidemiologische studies over de periode 1999-2016, waarin werd gekeken naar magnesium in de voeding en verschillende ziekten. De resultaten werden gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift BMC Medicine en tonen aan dat personen met een hogere magnesiuminname 10% minder risico lopen op coronaire ziekten, 12% minder risico op cerebrovasculaire accidenten (CVA) en 26% minder risico op diabetes type 2.
Bij een verhoging van de magnesiuminname met 100 mg/per dag verlaagt het risico op CVA met 7% en het risico op diabetes type 2 met 19%.
Volkorengranen en noten
De auteurs benadrukken dat het gaat om magnesium uit voeding, vooral te vinden in volkorengranen, noten, peulvruchten, bladgroenten, cacao en kruiden. Deze analyse is gebaseerd op observatiestudies en legt uiteraard geen causaal verband tussen magnesium en de verlaging van het risico op ziekten. Door de grote schaal van het onderzoek beschikt men echter over overtuigende gegevens die, zo stellen de auteurs, niet veranderen na bijstellingen wat betreft geslacht en plaats. Ze zien dus een duidelijk gezondheidsvoordeel in de opname van magnesium via de voeding.
