Nieuwe studies bij kiemvrije muizen laten zien dat een dieet rijk aan plantaardige vetten obesitas in de hand werkt, in tegenstelling tot een dieet rijk aan dierlijke vetten en cholesterol.
De darmmicrobiota speelt een rol in de energiebalans, maar we weten nog niet hoe dit mechanisme precies werkt. Het is wel bekend dat veranderingen in de microbiota soms leiden tot gewichtsveranderingen. En vetten? We dachten dat we de rol van vetten in de ontwikkeling van metabole stoornissen hadden ontrafeld, maar de resultaten van deze studie druisen in tegen de traditionele opvatting dat plantaardige vetten zijn beter dan dierlijke.
Een dieet met of zonder cholesterol
Een team van de Technical University of Munich vergeleek twee voedingspatronen bij muizen: een dieet rijk aan plantaardige vetten (palmolie) en een dieet met veel dierlijke vetten (reuzel). Ze voerden het experiment uit bij kiemvrije muizen (dieren zonder darmbacteriën) en bij normale muizen (controlegroep). In de controlegroep ontwikkelden zowel de muizen uit de ‘plantaardige’ als die uit de ‘dierlijke’ groep obesitas. Bij de kiemvrije muizen daarentegen kwam overgewicht enkel voor bij de dieren die voer kregen met plantaardige vetten. De kiemvrije dieren die reuzel kregen, ontwikkelden geen extra vetmassa …
Een hoger energieverbruik
Volgens professor Martin Klingenspor, een van de onderzoekers, versnelt het metabolisme van de dieren die gevoed worden met reuzel. Deze muizen verbruiken dus veel meer energie.
Verder onderzoek suggereert bovendien dat cholesterol uit de voeding een rol speelt. De hoeveelheid voedingscholesterol in beide diëten verschilt sterk (ook omdat de plantaardige voeding fytosterolen bevat, die de absorptie van cholesterol verlagen). Voedingscholesterol verhoogt de productie van cortisol, een stof die het energieverbruik stimuleert, en vermindert de opslag van galzouten. Het is echter zeker niet zo dat spek je helpt om af te vallen!
