Volgens een recente Noorse studie hebben zwangere vrouwen die regelmatig biologische groenten eten, minder kans op pre-eclampsie dan vrouwen die dat niet doen.
Het doel van deze studie bestond erin de potentiële associaties te onderzoeken tussen de consumptie van biologische producten en het risico van pre-eclampsie bij vrouwen tijdens hun eerste zwangerschap.
Pre-eclampsie of zwangerschapgeïnduceerde hypertensie treedt gewoonlijk op tijdens de tweede helft van de zwangerschap en wordt geassocieerd met proteïnurie. In ernstige gevallen kan het een bedreiging vormen voor het leven van de moeder en de foetus. Het is ook een algemene oorzaak van prematuriteit bij pasgeborenen.
In deze prospectieve cohortstudie werden tussen 2002 en 2008 28.192 vrouwen gevolgd die zwanger waren van hun eerste kind. Het interview bestond uit twee vragenlijsten, een over voedingsfrequentie en een over de algemene gezondheidstoestand. De interviews werden afgenomen tussen de vierde en de vijfde maand van de zwangerschap.
Op het einde van de studie trad bij 5,3% van de deelnemende vrouwen pre-eclampsie op. Vrouwen die regelmatig of overwegend biologische groenten aten (8,8% van de totale groep), liepen 24% minder risico dan vrouwen die nooit of slechts af en toe biologische groenten aten.
Deze associatie blijft ook betrouwbaar na correctie voor verschillende verstorende factoren, zoals de evenwichtigheid van het eetpatroon. Anderzijds lijkt er enkel een verband te bestaan voor biologische groenten, en niet voor andere vormen van biologische voedingsmiddelen (fruit, granen, eieren, melk en producten die meerdere van deze voedingsmiddelen bevatten).
Volgens de auteurs zijn er verschillende factoren die het beschermende effect kunnen verklaren: de moeders die biologische groenten aten, werden minder blootgesteld aan pesticiden of aan bepaalde secundaire plantmetabolieten. Ook de samenstelling van de darmflora zou een rol kunnen spelen.
